I took Microbiology through westcott, it was difficult. However, if you just did the openstax random quizzes relentlessly you'll pass. That said. I also did the statistics class for nursing pre-reqs. Good Lord almighty what is going on here? You'll feel good for the first three chapters. then all *** breaks loose. They do not teach you how to do anything. You get 30 slides per chapter with no other resources. When I started to struggle i reached out and all I got was the IT department. There was no professor to speak to. You WILL have to teach yourself. I failed; even after an extension. This course is not worth the time or money. Stats is difficult, you cannot teach yourself. Do NOT waste your time with this course.

Unfair tests, quizzes, and especially grading! They would take off 80% of the points because of one simple mistake; even if you got the question right. Also, the tests covered subjects not taught in the class.

Trigonometry Class Difficulty

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
This class was extremely hard (even for those who were above average in math). Half of the lesson is learned in the homework section of the lessons, but if you did all the homework, each lesson would take 3+ hours. I had to spend lots of time looking at their examples of homework problems to find out the steps, cause their steps were not mentioned in the actual lesson. However, there is a lot of good stuff, and the customer support is extremely fast and helpful. If you are a high schooler looking to take this class, and looking to keep a 4.0 GPA through high school, I do not recommend taking it as a dual credit unless you are extremely good at math, and very very fast. The final is proctored and only allowed to take 3 hours max on. If you are excellent at math but slow, there is no way you would be able to complete all the final exam questions in the allotted time, and your grade would greatly suffer.

A response from their staff: Thank you for letting know about the error. In any text book there will be errors.

This will happen in any math class you take at all high schools and colleges. This is why text books continue to publish new editions. We do have an editor that goes through our classes very carefully, but even then somethings may get pass him. I will fix this problem to say increase instead of decrease.

[...] We put a lot of time into each of the classes we write. From start to finish we take at least a year to write one course.

Once a lesson is written, then it goes through two different people looking for errors and typos. If you decide to continue with the class, I am hear to help.

Don't be confused by the 3 stars, the staff has been nice, but as a whole I'd give the entire place a 1 star as I do not feel they care about their 'students'

Original review Jul 30, 2018
If you don't know the stuff, you're doomed to fail. I've attached multiple screenshots of the mistypes in their curriculum, and one of the screenshots is even a question on a TEST. Here is the question "A bus took a 25-hour trip and traveled 985 miles. The speed was 38 mph for the first part of the trip, and then decreased to 43 mph for the second part of the trip. How many hours were traveled at each speed?" How does the speed of a bus decrease from 38 mph to 43 mph? And how am I supposed to make a problem out of that? I could assume it was a typo, maybe they meant 38 mph increased to 43 mph, or maybe they meant 43 mph decreased to 38 mph? Who knows! But should I make any of those assumptions? Especially on a test? There is no instructor, I've sent in a question and have got an answer back, but the way it is setup I sent the question through the 'tech support' contact box. I'm very confused what I'm paying $125 for when I could get a much better course for this stuff on udemy for $10. If you already know the math and just want the credits, then sure, this 'college' would probably be a good time saver for you. But if you don't know the stuff, be warned, it's frustrating and riddled with errors. Luckily few of the errors I've seen involve the actual math (at least directly) but many of them will decrease your trust in the schools desire to make a good course and increase your suspicion that they're just trying to take your money. There is also the answer sheet for homework, it gives the answers to all questions, but only gives the solutions to the evens. Which I've had times I wanted to know how an even was solved as there was no odd that was like it, but of course, there is no solution drawn out. Bottom line, if you know the stuff, great, this is probably going to be an amazing thing for you and save you lots of time. If you don't know this stuff, you're going to need to find a tutor, as this course does not cover enough to allow you to learn from it alone. In the very least, how can you have any faith in a course that charges hundreds of dollars but doesn't care enough to proof-read before publishing?

Convenient, Flexible and Cheap

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
The first class I took was Linear Algebra and all the assignments were pretty straightforward. The classes give you two chances for quizzes and chapter tests. The only exception is the final where you get one chance. If you are taking any math classes, I recommend getting used to working with a TI-36 pro, as it is the highest calculator you can use on the final (any non-graphing calculator is allowed, but I found this one to be the best for my needs). If you can do the chapter exams without referencing the solutions, you will be fine. This online system is very good and convenient for students who need classes for transfer or preparation. Also, the classes are fairly cheap when compared to other online classes. If you are someone who is good at working on your own with limited assistance, this class is for you.

Hi there, As long as you can do the tests without referencing the solutions you are saying we will do fine on the final? I have been studying tests in preparation.

Hopefully that is enough. Thank you!

Course felt massive and unmanageable

I should start off by saying I actually passed this course and final exam, but just by the skin of my teeth and by obsessively studying. If you are desperate enough and devote your life to these confusing and massive lesson plans, you can probably do it. I studied minimum 3-5 hours EVERY day for 6 months, and still felt like I was drowning in lesson plans. 5 months is definitely not long enough, so I requested the (thankfully gratis) extra 30 days. I would be very, very interested in the success rate of the students in this course. I am willing to bet it is low, at least for the first attempt. I will say that every time I reached out for support from Omega they got back to me within a day. I found nothing at all wrong with the customer service and support, and in fact they were very helpful. However, from a pragmatic standpoint, this course felt really unrealistic and I am still shocked that I managed to pass it. If it is your last resort, then you can do it. But I would advise checking out other, hopefully more manageable options, first.

Linear algebra

My opinion is the class was fine, BUT you must already have some math knowledge. If you can't figure math out on your own this is going to be hard. I am an engineer who is going back to get a teaching degree. If you need someone to hold your hand as you learn math, then online might not be your best option. This class gives you a textbook & sample problems you can see what they do. But you have to be able to figure things out on your own.

Thx for Linear Alg. class feedback. Have you taken Methods of Proof or Abstract via Westcott?

You can't start algebra without knowing general math, period ...... I personally hate algebra and it became the only subject I ever despised, failed, and dropped (with no regrets whatever) ...

plane geometry was awful as well but mostly because our instructor had a nasty habit of falling asleep during class (hey, that's MY job) ...

I never thought algebra made any sense - why substitute letters for perfectly good real numbers ? ...Unless you're trying to become an engineer or teacher, just forget algebra as a course and live by the principles - to shoot a moving target , aim ahead ...

Westcott courses is a complete scam whose only focus is not the students success in their courses but to take their money. I would love to know the success rate of students in their credited math courses. I had spoken to Nancy many times about my misunderstanding of the chapter tests and she advised me to do all the homework to see what I did wrong , I did that for every test and could not see errors in my work and in simpler terms just told me to try harder. They do a very poor job at explaining the work on the course and over the phone, compared to the questions on the test it is by no means helpful and I am very surprised that they are regionally accredited.

Pro's and ***'s of this course

So I am a sophmore in highschool and I have done their algebra 1 and 2 course in highschool. the lessons are massive, and they focus on one concept per lesson. after every lesson, you take a quiz with 4-6 problems of what you did on your homework to see if you understood it. if you fail, you can retake it, which is nice. the lessons are meant for you to only do 2 a week, and do evens or odds if your teacher allows. there are units, and the lessons in the unit each focus on a simmilar aspect. at the end of a unit, you take a test. you can also take the test more than once to replace your grade. the nice thing about doing it in highschool is that you get college credit! that means after geometry, YOU ARE FINNISHED WITH MATH CLASSES. no math in college. that's amazing.

This person makes it seem you can retake your quizzes and tests multiple times. While it's true you can take them twice, that is it.

And your final exam is only once. Also, if you haven't seen my review, their courses are riddled with errors.

Okay I thought it was just me! I always recheck the questions and almost EVERY time my answer was right??

You cannot retake your quizzes and tests more than twice. Your final test can't be taken more than once, and you'll possibly need a tutor, for as far as I've seen I haven't had access to an instructor to help me through anything.

Tell us more about OMEGA MATH Pros vs Cons

I was just hoping someone could use critical thinking and real facts. Like Math is a subject that has to be practiced, repeated, and you have to try to learn it in order to pass. I would like to know: 1. What are the exams like? 2. How long do you have for an exam 3. Are there any online tutors for the course? 4. Is there a lab along with the course? 5. If you have questions whom do you contact? 6. Is this a typical online course? 7. Is there homework or just exams? The statements made although some are quite good there are others that seem more opinionated rather than telling pros and cons. Show us both sides. The good part from where I read is that you don't have to go to CLASS. I'm trying to finish up a degree and I need two math classes. I took some at WLAC in person but I need to get two more classes and this seems like something that will work with my schedule (working full time). I would like to also know how the program online is. For example: Does the website work or does it crash when too many are on it? Do you find the material helpful? How often do you need to log on? How are grades calculated? How much did the class cost when you took it? I mean these are legit questions and sometimes it's easier to ask other students. The other question which teachers are offering it? Which teachers are good and which ones suck? Just asking. Tell us more details. You're a critical thinker. Give us the FACTS.

OMEGA MATH--College Algebra

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
I worked with Omega Math and Nancy for Intermediate Algebra and College Algebra. Nancy Davis, the owner, was very helpful and professional. If I found errors in their program, they were quickly corrected by the IT staff and I always received a followup, personal call back from Nancy. I took the the final proctored College Algebra exam at a local community college, and I found that Omega Math completely prepared me for the exam. I DID put a lot of time and energy into my studies and always did ALL the homework and testing as Nancy prescribed. From my view, Nancy was always there for me to answer ANY questions. She was very patient with me and she even gave me extra extensions when I had personal matters come up. I DO feel that if students willing to totally commit themselves to perform ALL the homework, they WILL have difficulty with any online higher-mathematics course; so to that extent, make sure you have the time and motivation to take online classes in math--and the basic prerequisites mastered (I recommend a B or above in math prerequisites) or the recommendation from your instructors who taught you the prerequisite courses. College Algebra is a tough course that requires commitment and the mastering of Intermediate Algebra. DO NOT try to "Wing It" by simply powering through the coursework by simply taking the quizzes. The homework is what prepares you for increasingly difficult mathematical procedures and processes.

I am getting ready to take the college algebra final for the westcott course, is the final easy as long as you do the class work? Is it multiple choice?

I think they said the problems come from the chapter tests, is it the exact same questions with just different numbers?

Please give me some feedback about the final I would like to pass. Thanks so much.

Westcott Courses Course Review

I hate this class!!! I would consider myself above average in math, but this program sucks. They jump from problems to the solutions with little to no explanation. They have no video, teacher to help, but they do have to where you can call and ask for help on a problem, because help with one problem can help you understand the whole section.

Omega Math / Westcott courses are trash

First off, the courses are TOO long, to complete each day lesson fully and completely it takes 3-4+ hours and if you miss one day you're basically screwed since it takes forever. As for actually in depth learning? forget it, the courses are the equivalent of just picking up a math textbook and trying to learn a whole algebra course on there. Would've been nice to have a video of a teacher on there showing you how to do the math. Also, when you miss a problem or get it wrong on the quiz/test they don't provide the correct answer, leaving me stumped still on those tough problems. Bottom line, omega math / westcott courses suck just take the class in person, it will save you so much time and you might actually learn something.

I'm taking a class with Westcott. If you need help, you just email them and they will help right away.

When you get answers wrong on your quizzes, you just need to click on my grades and then click the review button to see the correct answers as well as the answer you gave.

You get six months to complete the class, so if you miss a day, you still have plenty of time to finish.

Some lessons are short, and some are long. They give you plenty of examples to learn from.

Omega Math Is A Scam

I was enrolled in a college algebra course (for credit) through Omega Math. I became concerned over the quality (or lack of) of the material and subsequently, the timeframe in which it would realistically take to complete the course and pass the final exam. During this time I was working with two professional math tutors. During the time I was taking the course, both tutors reached the conclusion that the course was designed to take longer than the 5 month subscription (requiring an extension fee), and that the final exam required for college credit was likely also designed for failure and therefore the need to pay additional fees to retake the test. Because I was up against a timeline for college graduation, and dependent upon successful completion of this course for required credit hours and a specific mathematics requirement, I contacted contacted customer service at Omega Math to discuss my concerns, giving them the benefit of doubt. The customer service agent hung up on me and CEO Nancy Davis called me back. During this call, she was irrational and unprofessional and hung up on me when I referenced my math tutor having an engineering degree from Stanford. I then received an email from the IT department at Omega Math and an additional email from Nancy Davis stating that my account had been deactivated. At this point I had been taking the class for two months, and no longer had access to my coursework, transcripts or any other information. Thankfully I was eventually able to work with my university to ensure graduation by fulfilling credits and requirements. Omega Math at best offers extremely poorly designed courses, and at worst is a full on scam profiting only from students forced to pay money to lengthen their subscriptions or to retake the final exam. Nancy Davis is completely unprofessional and should not be regarded as a serious educator. Unfortunately the lack of regulation around private online education makes it extremely challenging to take legal action against companies like Omega Math.

Can confirm. This is the worst company ever.

Taking linear algebra without any instruction besides the textbook? Get ready to fail! My boyfriend who is a math phd took this exact course (mymathlab and all) via a professor years ago and concluded that the way omega math teaches it sets you up to fail. I have to agree with him.

Though I'm passing the class now, there is no reason omega needs to cut costs to the point that a student has literally no chance of actually learning the content. DO NOT TAKE A CLASS FROM OMEGA

Guest

The Courses are designed to meet or exceed WASC requirements. You receive 5 months, and an extra 30 day extension if required.

I have worked with lots of students who have completed the course in as little as 2-3 months.

Omega Math is one of the few places where you can take a college level course, receive transferable credits, and it cost under $1,000 USD. While the content is challenging, it is one of the most comprehensive online courses I've seen. Part of the reason the courses are so comprehensive is specifically because you receive a transcript from a regionally accredited college.

Other places offer ACE accreditation (some colleges may not take it due to lack of proctored finals being a requirement), and have articulation agreements setup with a handful of for profit colleges (read predatory schools). With a transcript from a regionally accredited college, you can transfer the course anywhere.

i have never had a single issue with dealing with Support. they have always been polite and helpful.

Several students took omega math. I'm saying very good students running A's or B,'s. The finals are proctored. All students failed by 2. Paying $500 dollars a second time to retake the course.
